How the baseline works.

Adjust the results
Only completed regular-season games are included. Scoring margins are adjusted for the opponents played. Four average-game equivalents stabilize small samples.

Blend by games
Last season's regular-season rating is pulled 35% toward league average. Current regular-season results receive a weight of games ÷ (games + 4).

Set a starting line
Home rating minus away rating plus 1.5 points for home field (zero at neutral sites) forms the provisional spread. No preseason results are used.
